Oil on canvas

In the months that followed his trip to Russia in late 1911, Matisse continued to develop his distinctive category of studio still lifes. The monochrome surface introduced in The Red Studio is also found in the two later works in this gallery, which are characterized by a new, abstract spatiality.
This is the sole painting in which Matisse depicted the exterior of his Issy studio. It is shown from the perspective of the second-floor bedroom he shared with his wife Amélie in their house on the adjoining lot. The view through the window shows the studio nestled in the surrounding trees.
