Descendant d'indiens zapotèques, marqué par la culture maya, Rufino Tamayo développe une expression très personnelle, nourrie de sources précolombiennes et de peinture moderne, en particulier du cubisme 

et du surréalisme. Ses œuvres invitent à reconsidérer différemment les liens de l'homme à l'univers 

alors que l'ère spatiale connaît son avènement après-guerra. En 1950, préfaçant le catalogue de sa première exposition parisienne à la galerie des Beaux-arts, Breton loue cette peinture, capable selon lui de 

« rouvrir la voie de grande communication que la peinture doit être entre les continents ».

As a descendant of the Zapotec indigenous people, influenced by Maya culture, Rufino Tamayo developed a highly personal form of expression, nurtured by pre-Columbian sources and modern painting, particularly Cubism and Surrealism. His works prompt a new take on connections between humankind and the universe with the enset of the post-war Space Age. In 1950, Breton prefaced the catalogue for Tamayo's first Parisian exhibition at the gallery des Beaux-Arts, showering praise on this painting, which he deemed capable of once again opening the road to great communication between the continents, fulfilling the role of painting."

Dans les « Prolégomènes à un troisième Manifeste, ou non » (1942), André Breton reconsidère la place 

de l'homme au sein du cosmos : « L'homme n'est peut-être pas le centre, le point de mire de l'univers ». Loin de la posture moderne d'un homme coupé d'une nature dont il se veut le possesseur, le surréalisme emprunte au Moyen Âge son principe d'une continuité entre microcosme (le corps humain comme image réduite de l'univers) et macrocosme (l'univers tout entier). La visite d'André Breton en territoires Hopi 

et celle d'Antonin Artaud chez les Indiens Tarahumaras confirment leur intuition qu'une autre relation 

au monde est encore possible.

La planche gravée, que publie André Masson en 1943, intitulée « Unité du cosmos », ne dit pas autre chose : « Il n'y a rien d'inanimé dans le monde, une correspondance existe entre les vertus des minéraux, des végétaux, des astres et des corps animaux ».

In the "Prolegomena to a Third Manifesto of Surrealism or Not" (1942), André Breton reconsidered humankind's place in the cosmos: "Man is perhaps not the centre, not the focus of the universe." Far from the modern position of humankind cut off from nature, wishing to be its possessor, Surrealism borrowed the medieval principle of continuity between the microcosm (the human body like a miniature image of the universe) and macrocosm (the entire universe). André Breton's travels to Hopi land and Antonin Artaud's journey to the Tarahumaras, confirmed their intuition that another relationship with the world was still possible. The engraving published by André Masson in 1943, entitled "Unity of the Cosmos", endorses this: "Nothing is inanimate in the world, there is a correspondence between the virtues of minerals, plants, the stars and animal bodies."
