C'est en 1841 ou 1842 que la reine Victoria commande à John Lucas un portrait destiné au roi
Louis-Philippe; cette version a sans doute été peinte peu après.
Le prince Albert, qui s'intéresse vivement aux bijoux de la reine, en conçoit souvent à son intention.

JOYAUX ET TENUES D'APPARAT À LA COUR DE LA REINE VICTORIA
Dans la Grande-Bretagne victorienne, les cérémonies d'État deviennent des événements aussi fastueux que codifiés. Elles projettent l'image d'une nation prospère et d'un ordre social stable, à une époque où guerres et révolutions ont entraîné la chute de nombreuses dynasties européennes.
Les bijoux portés lors de ces cérémonies font partie intégrante de cette mise en scène: les toilettes et parures de la reine et de sa cour sont largement commentées dans les chroniques mondaines des journaux.

ROYAL JEWELS AND CEREMONIAL ATTIRE AT QUEEN VICTORIA'S COURT
In Victorian Britian ceremonial and state occasions became highly organised and splendid affairs. They promoted an image of national prosperity and the stability of the social hierarchy at a time when war and revolutions in Europe saw many dynastic houses removed from power. The jewels worn to these affairs were an integral part of this projection and the jewellery and dress of the queen and her court were widely reported in the social columns of newspapers of the day.Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were passionately interested in jewellery. UN LANGAGE CODIFIÉ DE L'AMOUR
Depuis l'Antiquité, les motifs et les matériaux utilisés dans la joaillerie sont empreints d'une signification souvent symbolique.
Les bijoux font état d'un lien profondément intime avec leurs propriétaires, car ils sont portés au plus près du corps, souvent
à même la peau: aux doigts pour les bagues, autour des poignets, encerclant les tempes ou posés sur la poitrine,
contre le cœur.
De nombreux symboles de protection ont été peu à peu réinterprétés comme des motifs sentimentaux, exprimant la passion et les liens indissolubles forgés par l'amour. L'importance et la significationde gemmes spécifiques viennent nourrir un langage codifié de l'amour, où les pierres rouges représentent l'ardeur de la passion. Les motifs floraux permettent d'exprimer différentes émotions; on les associe
à des pierres de couleur pour créer des présents incarnant la fidélité amoureuse.

The meaning and significance of particular gemstones also became part of the language of love where red stones represented the fire of passion. The flora of the natural world became symbolic of different emotional meanings, combined with coloured stones to create gifts that represented the devotion of the giver to their beloved.
THE LANGUAGE OF LOVE
