Ce tableau est l'un des derniers du peintre, dont la fin de vie fut marquée par le malheur.
Il représente la mort comme la victoire de l'âme: elle se libère de son enveloppe terrestre battue
par les flots tempétueux, où rampe le serpent de l'Envie, et rejoint enfin la lumière de l'immortalité.
