Mané-Katz passe sa jeunesse dans une atmosphère de religiosité qui nourrira son œuvre. S'affirmant comme le peintre de la culture yiddish, l'artiste représente ici trois hassidim qui cherchent à travers le chant et la prière la communion joyeuse avec Dieu et l'extase. Cette œuvre est entrée dans les collections publiques en 1937, année au cours de laquelle la troupe Habima joue Le Dibbouk à Paris à l'occasion de l'Exposition internationale. Son acquisition démontre l'intérêt porté par les musées au monde juif.

Le Dibbouk à Paris
À Paris, en 1926, la troupe Habima joue Le Dibbouk au théâtre de la Madeleine.
L'année suivante, la pièce est traduite en français, avec une préface d'Edmond Fleg, puis montée
par Gaston Baty au Studio des Champs-Élysées en 1928.
Cette adaptation française est reprise avec succès en 1930 au théâtre Montparnasse. Antonin Artaud, qui découvre l'œuvre, note: « Dans une scène extraordinaire, [Léal parle avec la voix même de l'homme qui réclame ce qui lui a été destiné, c'est-à-dire la femme, c'est-à-dire elle-même I...!
La voix avec laquelle cet être revendiquait son bien est l'une des choses les plus terribles que j'ai entendues.»
En 1937, à l'occasion de l'Exposition internationale, Habima revient jouer à guichets fermés, à la Salle Pleyel. La troupe, installée à Tel-Aviv depuis 1928, incarne désormais le theâtre national juif.
Fondée pendant 'Occupation, la troupe des Compagnons de l'Arche dirigée par André Marcovici choisit aussi Le Dibbouk pour remonter sur scène au théâtre La Bruyère en 1947, puis au théâtre Édouard VII. Charles Denner y fait ses débuts.

In Paris in 1926 the Habima troupe performed The Dybbuk at the Théâtre de la Madeleine. The following year, the play was translated into French with a preface by Edmond Fleg and staged by Gaston Baty at the Studio des Champs-Élysées in 1928.
This French adaptation was successfully performed again in 1930 at the Théâtre Montparnasse. When Antonin Artaud saw the play he noted: "In an extraordinary scene Leah speaks with the voice of the man claiming what was to be his, that is the woman, namely herself I...] The voice with which this being is claiming his property is one of the most terrible things I have heard".
In Paris in 1937, to coincide with the International Exposition, the Habima players returned to play to packed houses at the Salle Pleyel. The troupe, established in Tel Aviv since 1928, took on the role of the national theatre of Israel.
Founded during the Occupation, the Compagnons de l'Arche company, directed by André Marcovici, also chose The Dybbuk to return to the stage at the Théâtre La Bruyère in 1947, then at the Théâtre Edouard VII, in which Charles Denner made his stage.
