Moving to Issy-les-Moulineaux provided Matisse with many opportunities to create floral still-life paintings. Geraniums, nasturtiums, tulips, violets, lilacs, cyclamens, and much more could be found in the abundant gardens surrounding the house and studio, and in the property's greenhouse.
This painting —the only still life reproduced in The Red Studio - appears to have been executed very quickly: color was applied thinly and with rapid strokes, and areas of canvas around the cyclamen's leaves and the corner foliage were left unpainted.
From other works it is known that the small round table was in the greenhouse, and it may well be that Matisse made this painting there. Less naturalistic than the original, the depiction in The Red Studio is an almost abstract interpretation of the purple petals and green leaves. Matisse highlighted the unpainted areas as an important part of the painting's overall expression.
