Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) & Andy Warhol (1928-1987), United States The Los Angeles Summer Olympic Games defined the year 1984.
Boycotted by the Eastern bloc countries, the 1984 Games were a watershed moment in the history of sporting events. This huge canvas, resembling an advertising banner, reflects their economic and mediatic impact.
The symbol - five circles representing the five continents, colored to evoke all the flags of the world - guided Warhol in choosing a motif;
he and Basquiat went on to create several works on the same theme.
In the center of the composition, Warhol's painting takes up the geometric symbol of the rings, while Basquiat's intervention, visible, done in black, obstructing the rings, imposes on them a black face, front on, the "invisible man" at the painting's heart. From Jessie Owens's 1936 victory to the raised fists of Tommie Smith and John Carlos in 1968, the Olympic Games have often been the scene of decisive moments for the visibility of the African-American community. Basquiat transforms the fraternal universal Olympic emblem into a chain.
A key work in the exhibition Basquiat x Warhol, Painting Four Hands, shown at Fondation Vuitton in 2023, the loan was graciously extended to celebrate the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris.
