Matisse's painting Bathers directly relates to Paul Cézanne's exploration of this subject, which he pursued in scores of paintings and works on paper. Cezanne mattered a great deal to Matisse. In 1899, with barely enough money for food or rent, he purchased Cézanne's painting Three Bathers
(1879-1882), and in 1908, he bought six of his watercolors.
In this 1907 painting, Matisse adopts Cézanne's strategy of leaving certain areas of the canvas unpainted, producing a strong sense of unfinishedness. In his rendition of this painting in The Red Studio, Matisse emphasized these features, simplifying the subject to the point where it consists only of fields of color. The two figures are depicted by means of patches of pink and a few loosely drawn pencil lines corresponding to the contour lines of the original.
