This bronze, a masterpiece of Mannerist art, was commissioned by King François I of France (reigned 1515-1547) to decorate the 'golden gate' of his château at Fontainebleau.
It shows the king's hunting dogs finding a fountain that is represented here as a nymph (a nature deity).
The sensual figure sculpted by Cellini has an idealised, firm and supple body consistent with the Mannerist style; the animals around her are depicted with naturalistic precision.
