Ce tableau onirique et rempli de symboles renvoie à la tradition de la peinture allégorique.
Dans cette forêt tourmentée, Jörg Immendorff place au premier plan un miroir géant qui reflète une scène d'atelier réalisée en grisaille. Au second plan, il peint un homme de dos (sans doute lui-même) avec, en guise de tête, la réplique d'un globe représenté dans une gravure du 16° siècle. Flanquée des figures allégoriques des Vices et des Vertus, la sphère évoque l'instabilité du monde, mais le halo éclairant la route du personnage ainsi que la chouette au premier plan semblent symboliser la voie de la sagesse.
This oneiric painting laden with symbols invokes the tradition of allegorical painting.
In the foreground of this tormented forest scene, Jörg Immendorff placed a giant mirror reflecting an art studio painted in grisaille. In the background he depicted a man (probably himself) with his back to the viewer and, as his head, the replica of a globe represented in a 16th century engraving.
Flanked by the allegorical figures of the Vices and Virtues, the sphere evokes the instability of the world while the halo illuminating the figure's way and the owl in the foreground seem to symbolise the path of wisdom.
