Gate, 1959
Aluminium peint | Painted aluminumWalker Art Center, Minneapolis Gift of Kate Butler Peterson, 1997
It was by cutting an x-shape from an envelope and folding it that Kelly created the sketch for Gate,
one of his first sculptures. The work is a direct descendant of his paintings: it continues his goal,
to liberate form from ground. Far from the wall, the form here has its own existence in space and
on the floor, but it retains painting's two-dimensionality, though without the mass inherent
in a traditional sculpture.
In this, as in his use of color, Kelly's familiarity with the work of Alexander Calder, to whom he was close, should be noted.
