Born in 1906, in Greenville on the East coast of America, James Harrison Wilson (Jim) Thompson came from an established family; his father was a wealthy textile businessman, and his mother was the daughter
of a noted Union general during the American Civil War. After his studies, Thompsonworked as an architect in New-York at Holden, McLaughlin and Associated. In 1941, he quit his job and enlisted with the US Army.
Thompson was the youngest of five children. His parents were committed to many civic causes and had connections with the US President and many politicians. 
His father, Henry Burlington Thompson (1866-1935) was a trustee of PrincetonUniversity (class of 1877, 1906 - 1935) anf Chairman of the Grounds and Builtings Commitee.During his tenure, severaldistinctive Gothic building were added to the campus.
His mother, Mary Wilson Thompson (1866 - 1947) was the daughter of Civil War General  James Harrison Wilson (Jim) Thompson and a Delaware civic leader. She active in numerous civic causes, including historic preservation and children's health and education. In a memoir written in the 1930s, she mentioned her trips to Europe with her children as an important part of their education.
